"The Foot Book"

 Materials You Will Need:
-Different colors of paint
-Poster board or butcher's paper
-Containers for the paint
-Paintbrush sponges
-Baby wipes

I started my Dr. Seuss based art lessons, with my all-time favorite Dr. Seuss book. That book is titled, "The Foot Book". I actually had to do this art lesson twice. The first time I dumped paint into flat containers and had the children step into the paint then onto the poster board. I have scanned in the results of the first attempt at this art lesson.
I definitely didn't like the result of doing the lesson that way so I went back to the drawing board to think of a different way to do this art lesson. I came up with, have the children sit in a chair, pick the color of paper they wanted, and then sponge the paint onto the children's feet and then have them step down onto the piece of paper. Here are the results of the second time we did the footprints.
SUCCESS! With using the sponging technique their footprint came out much clearer, and there wasn't as much of a mess to clean up. This technique worked so well that I used it more than once.

"Cat In The Hat" and "How The Grinch Stole Christmas"

Materials You Will Need:
-Foam doorknob hangers
-Glue or glue dots
-Tag board
-Crayons or Markers
-Scissors
-Glitter letters

For the art activity using  the books "The Cat In The Hat" and "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" we made door hangers. You can get the template HERE. The template has a picture of the Cat in the Hat for one side and the Grinch for the other. For the activity I let the children color the picture. After they were done coloring I let them pick out a foam door hanger.  I added my own twist to this activity. After the children had colored and cut out the picture we used glue dots to put it on tagboard. After it was glued to the tagboard we cut it out again, and then finally glued it to the foam doorknob hanger. Then to add a little bit of a wow factor I had them put their names on the doorknob hangers using self adhesive foam glitter letters. You never want to miss a chance to use glitter.

Introducing Children to the Colorful World of Dr. Seuss

The reason I chose to do my blog on Dr. Seuss is because, I grew up with his books being read to me; or I would read the books myself. As soon as I told Diana my topic of Dr. Seuss incorporated with art, I rushed right home and went through all of my books from my childhood to see how many Dr. Seuss books I had. I had to have at least ten for this project. To my surprise, while I was going through all of my childhood books, the ones I loved the most and thought were written by Dr. Seuss, sadly were not. For example, I loved the book “Go Dog Go” I swore it was written by Dr. Seuss. Sadly it’s not, it is written by P. D. Eastman.

Before I get into my blog, I wanted to give everyone a little background information about the famous children’s author Dr. Seuss. “Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in Springfield Massachusetts on March 2, 1904. He was not an official doctor, but his prescription for fun has delighted readers for more than 60 years” ("Dr. seuss biography," 2012).

At the time of his death on September 24, 1991, Ted had written and illustrated 44 children's books, including such all-time favorites as Green Eggs and Ham, Oh, the Places You'll Go, Fox in Socks, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. His books had been translated into more than 15 languages. Over 200 million copies had found their way into homes and hearts around the world. ("All about dr.," )

The books that I have decided to use for this blog are as follows:
The Foot Book
The Lorax
Ten Apples Up On Top
Oh the Thinks You Can Think
Horton Hears A Who
How The Grinch Stole Christmas
The Cat In The Hat
Green Eggs and Ham
Hop On Pop
The Shape of Me and Other Stuff
One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish
